Parenting Style

There are significant impact on child development that linked with parenting style. However, seeking for the link between the cause and effect is not easy due to specific action on parenting that later on will impact child's behaviours. in fact there are important dimensions on parenting, which are :
  1. Disciplinary
  2. Nurture
  3. Communication
  4. Expectation of the future

According to those dimensions, there are four majority parenting style, which are :

  1. Authoritarian Parenting, where the parent established strict rules that later on, if the child fail to do what they has been told to do, they will get punish. This type of parenting has highly controllable and poor responsive to the child.
  2. Authoritative Parenting, where rules developed by parents, however parents are much democratic and want to listen to child. parents has high control either high responsive to the child.
  3. Permissive Parenting, situation when parents is act and play a role as a friend to their child because parents seems like to avoid confrontation from the kids. This type of parenting style led to poor control by parents but high responsive.
  4. Uninvolved Parenting, situation when parent has less communication, low control, and low responsive. In extreme case, parents neglecting their children.

Each parenting style has different impact to children, such as :
  1. Children more obedient and proficient, low happiness, social competence, and high self esteem under authoritarian parents.
  2. Children happy, capable, and successful. Also, children can control their emotional and can cope with stress under authoritative parents.
  3. Children under permissive parents most likely to low in happiness, self regulation, poor in school, and has more authority than other children.
  4. Uninvolved parents create children that has low esteem, less competent, and lack of self control.

Most of parents definitely has the reason to have different style of parenting, such as due to culture, personality, family size, parental experience, social-economic status, educational level, and religion. However, all parents would like to help their children shape their personality, pattern their health and behaviours, and more important is for future well being.
